Mac strolled into the room, heading for the coffee maker. "What's going on?" He poured off the last of the coffee before looking from Quinn to Britt and back to Quinn. "Um, what did I miss?"

They both ignored Mac's question.

Less than three days remained to get Gavin here and conduct the binding ceremony—all without alerting Dante—before they began the hunt for what was written in the scroll Britt had acquired.

Unmated, she grew more at risk. Dante would stop at nothing to take her away from him and make her his own. The demon would treat her like a broodmare. Creating more monsters like him. Quinn would not let it happen.

The need to take her remained strong and if they were to have sex before the ceremony, their binding would not take. Might never take. Damn the Fates for their messed-up sense of propriety because sex before marriage with your fated mated was a no-no—never mind the hundreds of women they'd all laid with over the millennia they'd been waiting.

No matter how she tempted him, he vowed to keep his hands off of Britt.

"Quinn? Why'd you stop? I—"

"Had to. We must go through the ritual first before we join, that way.”

"That way?" Her eyes widened, and she let out a frustrated sigh. "Listen, I'm not sure why my hormones went nuclear, but this need, this ache, it's still there. Less intense but, all I can think about is you. Us. Naked."

Mac cleared his throat. "Uh, still here."

They continued to ignore Mac.

"Ah, lass. I know. And it will increase the longer we are together. Until we are mated. We need to keep a bit of distance between us. But, not for long. I promise."

"Promise. What? This crazy talk of a binding ceremony doesn't work for me. All I want is…" Britt looked toward his brother, noting his grimace. "Sorry, Mac." She paced, rubbing her arms. "It'd be silly to deny ourselves after what just happened. But what I'm not willing to do is tie myself to you forever. I have a life to get back to and—don't look at me like that. I will get my life back."

"Give us a moment." Quinn nodded at an uncomfortable-looking Mac.

Centuries of not believing he would find his mate crashed down on him. He'd endured his existence without someone to share it with and now that he'd found her, he'd do whatever it took to keep her.

It was time to tell her just enough to get her to give him a chance at proving the prophecy true. But what to tell her that wouldn't increase her need to escape?

"Our sire—"

"You call your father sire?" Britt's tone was skeptical.

"Yes. Being a dad wasn't part of the deal."

Sadness mixed with questions appeared in Britt's eyes. Her reaction touched him, but he had to keep his emotions from overruling the destiny entwining them. To go against the Fates now would bring epic consequences. And it might also bring his father back into the fold, and that was something none of the Brethren wanted.
